Is There An ITT Tech Scam Because Of Its Accreditation?

You’ve probably seen the commercials for ITT Tech at least a million times since they are advertised so heavily.  The school claims to offer training in a variety of career fields that you can complete at one of their many campuses or entirely online at your own convenience.  You can then transition out of what you are currently doing into a much more rewarding and lucrative career.  It almost sounds too good to be true, right?  If you are like most people, you’re probably wondering whether there is an ITT Tech scam.  This is a question that can’t be answered with a straight yes or no.  In fact, it’s a bit complicated.  To determine whether ITT Tech is a scam, it’s necessary to take a look at the school’s history, structure, and accreditation.

A Little Background On The School And Its Structure

ITT Tech was founded in 1969 and its corporate offices are located in Carmel, Indiana.  The school has since grown to have over 100 campuses across the nation with a student population of over 80,000.  And in case you’re wondering what “ITT” stands for, it stands for “International Telephone and Telegraph.”

ITT Tech is a for-profit university.  This means the school exists for one primary purpose…. to generate a profit for its owners.  This puts it in the same category as other for-profit schools like The University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, Strayer University, and others you’ve probably heard of.  ITT Tech is actually owned by a parent corporation, ITT Educational Services, Inc., and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the stock symbol ESI. Being a for-profit school doesn’t necessarily make ITT Tech a scam.  Many for-profit schools are properly accredited and offer degree programs that can be used to launch a great career.

ITT Tech offers a wide variety of degree programs both at its many campus locations and online.  Degree programs are offered at the undergraduate level in such areas as information technology, drafting and design, criminal justice, electronics technology, business, and health sciences.  Graduate degrees are offered in business only.  The school’s degree programs are very diverse and seem to be concentrated in areas of study that are practical and lead to great careers.

Is ITT Tech Accredited?

The most important key to determining whether ITT Tech is a scam or not is to answer the question “Is ITT Tech Accredited?”  Again, this is not a question that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.”  The gold standard of collegiate accreditation in the United States is known as regional accreditation.  There are six regional accrediting agencies that are responsible for making sure the schools located within their geographic region meet minimum standards.  Duke, Penn State, and all of the Ivy League schools, for example, each hold regional accreditation.

ITT Tech does not hold regional accreditation.  This doesn’t mean ITT Tech is completely unaccredited.  ITT Tech holds accreditation from The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).  The ACICS is an agency that is recognized by the US Department of Education, however, it is not considered to be in the same league as regional accreditation.  In fact, if you start a program of study through ITT Tech and try to transfer your completed credits to another school, you will probably not be able to transfer those credits.  In addition, if you earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree through ITT Tech and plan on attending another school for a higher degree, your ITT Tech degree may not even be recognized.  This means you would either have to start your education all over again or cancel your plans of continuing your education.  Ironically, ITT Tech’s commercial’s even state that any credits earned through them are unlikely to transfer.  Most people miss this on the commercials because it is stated in very small print.

A School With A Controversial History

ITT Tech has experienced its share of controversy throughout the years.  For one thing, tuition at ITT Tech is very expensive.  An associate’s degree through ITT Tech requires approximately 90 credit hours to complete at a total price of nearly $50,000.  This is a lot of money to pay for a degree that does not have regional accreditation.

ITT Tech has been accused of being involved in grade inflation.  It is believed that schools do this to increase their federal student aid funding.  In investigation by a local television news program out of Green Bay, Wisconsin, on the rigor of ITT Tech tarnished the school’s reputation substantially.  A perfect score of 100% was given for a computer assignment when a recipe for noodles was submitted instead of the actual assignment.

So, Is ITT Tech A Scam?

ITT Tech should not be considered a scam, although its reputation is not stellar either.  The school is accredited, although its accrediting agency is not in the same league as what most schools use.  In addition, a degree earned through ITT Tech is extremely expensive.  In most cases, you can earn a degree online through your local community college for a tiny fraction of what ITT Tech charges.

If you are considering earning a degree through ITT Tech or any other school, it’s best to research the school and several alternatives before committing your hard-earned money to a degree program.

ITT is certainly a scam. To address the question of “accreditation”, at least with respect to technical areas of study (and “degrees” that they sell), be advised that ITT has NO programs that are ABET accredited; none at all. Neither does the so-called “University” of Phoenix. What is ABET? ABET is the private organization that inspects and accredits the technical courses at the best engineering schools in the U.S. Still don’t recognize ABET? Take a look at the classified section of your Sunday newspaper and look for employment ads by large well-known companies who are looking for engineering and computer science applicants. If you don’t have a degree from an ABET-accredited institution, then you might as well not bother applying; they’ll just send you a carefully-worded rejection letter and throw your resume into the trash can, which is exactly where it belongs. If you want to believe, or continue to believe, that you’re actually getting an “education” at some “school” like ITT Tech, then go right ahead and believe whatever makes you happy. It may take you a while to realize that you don’t get something for nothing, but you will eventually discover that your ITT Tech “credentials” aren’t worth the paper that they’re written on.
