Does Brown Mackie Online Hold Regional Accreditation?

Brown Mackie College has a rather lengthy history that goes all the way back to 1892.  The school system started out as the Kansas Wesleyan School of Business.  In 1938 the school changed its name to The Brown Mackie School of Business to reflect its new ownership.  The school has expanded exponentially since its earliest days and now has 24 campus locations throughout the United States with a total student enrollment of nearly 12,000.  Brown Mackie offers certificates, associate’s degrees, and bachelor’s degrees in business, legal, information technology, health sciences, veterinary, and education.

Brown Mackie College is structured a little differently than most colleges.  Most colleges and universities in the United States are structured as non-profit schools.  Brown Mackie is structured as a for-profit school.  This means the school exists to generate a profit for its owners.  Brown Mackie College is currently owned by Education Management Corporation (EDMC).  Other for-profit schools you may be familiar with include the University of Phoenix, Strayer University, DeVry University, and others.

Brown Mackie College Accreditation

In the United States the highest form of accreditation a college or university can obtain is known as regional accreditation.  There are six of these “regional accrediting agencies” that are each responsible for overseeing the various schools that fall within their respective geographic regions.  Just a few universities that hold regional accreditation include Stanford, Harvard, Cornell, and others.

It’s very important to point out that Brown Mackie College does not hold regional accreditation.  This doesn’t mean the school is completely unaccredited though.  The school is accredited by The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).  The ACICS is a valid accrediting agency that is recognized by the United States Department of Education, however, it is not considered to be in the same league as regional accreditation.  The ACICS typically accredits vocational and career schools.

If you do decide to attend Brown Mackie College, you could encounter some problems due to the school’s accreditation.  Most colleges and universities that hold regional accreditation will not accept credits earned from a school that does not hold the same level of accreditation.  So, if you take a few classes through Brown Mackie and then decide to transfer to another school, your credits most likely will not transfer.  In addition, if you do graduate with a Brown Mackie degree and then decide to earn an advanced degree at another school, you may have a hard time being accepted into a higher level degree program at another school.  Again, this is due to Brown Mackie’s lack of regional accreditation.

Brown Mackie Online

Currently, Brown Mackie College does not offer any online courses, although the school does offer a variety of certificates for continuing education students.  These certificates are in the fields of business, graphic design, and nursing.  Since most for-profit colleges have embraced online learning in a big way in recent years, it’s not unreasonable to expect a variety of Brown Mackie online programs sometime in the future.

Brown Mackie College Tuition

Brown Mackie College does not openly advertise its tuition and fees on its web site.  This is usually not a good sign.  To find out how much the school charges you have to call and speak with a representative.  In most cases this is used as an opportunity to deliver a high-pressure sales pitch to strongly encourage you to enroll.

What’s The Verdict?  Is Brown Mackie College A Good School?

When it comes down to it, Brown Mackie College really doesn’t offer any degree programs that are any different from your local community or state college.  And most likely, your local community college will be the more affordable option.  Not only that, but your local community college probably holds regional accreditation too.  Before you enroll in any Brown Mackie degree program, be sure to shop around and check out your options.
