If you’re reading this, you’re probably trying to conduct an internet search to find out about the reputation of American Military University. This is a smart move since it’s always a good idea to check out any school or program to see if it’s worth anything before putting your hard earned money into it and doing hundreds of hours of work towards a degree program. There’s really no easy answer to this question, however. To see how the school compares to others, it’s necessary to take a look at its history, structure, and accreditation.
Sister Schools With Similar Names
American Military University (AMU) was established in 1991 alongside of its sister school, American Public University (APU). The two schools were created at the same time as part of the American Public University System (APUS). Despite the fact that the schools sound like non-profit entities, they aren’t. These schools are set up as for-profit entities that exist to create a profit for their owners. This puts AMU and APU in the same league as other for-profit schools you might be familiar with such as The University of Phoenix, Capella University, Walden University, Strayer University, and others. Today, the school has an online student body of close to 80,000 students.
AMU’s corporate offices are split between Charles Town, West Virginia, and Manassas, Virginia. All of the school’s degree programs are offered entirely online. There are no in-person classes offered at any location. Not only is AMU a for-profit university, it is even traded on the stock exchange. It’s true. The stock symbol for American Public Education, Inc., the company that owns AMU and APU, is APEI. You can look it up on the New York Stock Exchange.
AMU Holds The Highest Form Of Accreditation Possible
As far as accreditation goes, AMU holds regional accreditation. The gold standard of collegiate accreditation in the United States is known as regional accreditation. The nation has six of these regional accrediting agencies that are responsible for making sure schools located withing their geographic region meet minimum standards. Each of the six regional accrediting agencies is considered to be equal to the others. A school only needs to be accredited by one of the six. Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, for example, are each accredited by one of the six regional accrediting agencies.
There is a second type of accreditation that you should be aware of. It’s often referred to as program accreditation or specialized accreditation. At larger schools, for example, business programs are usually accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Psychology programs are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). And so it goes with various departments and programs.
A Little Lacking In Specialized Accreditation
AMU currently does not have any specialized accreditation, although its business program is a candidate for accreditation through the Accreditation Counsel for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). ACBSP is a valid form of business school accreditation but it is not considered to be as prestigious as the previously mentioned AACSB accreditation.
A Good School Overall With Room To Grow
So, how can a person summarize the American Military University reputation? A degree awarded by AMU is accredited and valid and can be used to obtain a job or promotion in the United States. The school is not considered prestigious, however. And if you plan on using a graduate degree obtained from the school to obtain a teaching job at a college or university, you will most likely have a hard time doing so. For-profit universities are usually not even given a chance in the world of academia. The old guard of the ivory tower prefers graduates of prestigious schools or state schools that have a long and established history.
In a nutshell, if you don’t have any plans of teaching at a college or university, a degree from AMU will probably serve you fine. The school does have some very unique and interesting programs of study that are ideal for many career paths.
